Nightwing: The Target

“You’d think it’d be too cold for crime… But the drug traders don’t take snow days.”

There aren’t many combinations better than writer Chuck Dixon and Nightwing. Published by DC Comics in 2001 and illustrated by Scott McDaniel, Aaron Sowd, Willie Schubert, and Dave Stewart, Nightwing: The Target is a story that takes place in the city of Blüdhaven. When crime goes down in Blüdhaven, the scumbags have to answer to Nightwing.

Nightwing taking out the trash.
As soon as you turn the cover you're knee deep in action. Nightwing is chasing down a couple of drug traders who don't stand a chance. Money is flying everywhere, shots are being fired, and Nightwing neutralizes the situation with his usual grace.

By day, Nightwing is Dick Grayson: police officer. Sound familiar? Dick Grayson was once Batman's trusty sidekick, Robin. Here, he's a loner looking to clean up the city his own way.

Dick is out patrolling when he notices two thugs making a getaway. He spots some fellow officers chasing them down. Once he catches up to them, he watches his fellow officers brutally beat the hoodlums. Just when he's about to interject, he gets knocked out by the butt of the pistol of Miller, one of the police officers.

Dick wakes up in the hospital only to find out that one of those thugs was beaten to death, the other is almost dead, and he's the only suspect. Because of this, Dick gets suspended from the force until this whole thing is figured out. He heads home, and guess who's waiting for him in his apartment?

That's Bruce, always sticking his nose in other people's business.
Batman and Dick both agree that the only way Dick can gather enough information to clear his name is if he uses his alter ego. No, not Nightwing. Too risky. Any other guesses? IT'S RIGHT ON THE COVER. That's right. The Target, Dick's new alter ego. Don't worry, Nightwing fans, it's basically Nightwing with a mask and a bullseye on his chest.

As The Target, he finds out that Miller and his guys didn't even catch the real hoodlums. They beat the crap out of some innocent kids. The real thug's names were Bigs and Alvie. Apparently, some piece of trash drug dealer named Binh Dan hired Miller and his guys to kill Bigs and Alvie, who once worked for Binh.

Once Dick finds out about this, he pays Binh Dan a visit as The Target and sets fire to his entire operation. While Dick is single-handedly kicking some ass and destroying Binh's whole business, Dick's partner, Amy Rohrbach, finds Bigs and Alvie. To their credit, Bigs and Alvie set the record straight and as a result, Miller and his pals get locked up.

The truth is finally out and Dick gets reinstated to the police force. He better watch his back, however, because the rest of the force isn't too happy with Dick getting his fellow officers locked up. Dick couldn't care less, because Nightwing is back and the people of Blüdhaven have their hero again!
