DC Comics: The New 52 #1 (FCBD Edition)

*This post contains spoilers*

One title that any current reader of DC should have gotten on Free Comic Book Day (FCBD) is DC Comics: The New 52 #1. This comic book was written by Geoff Johns and Illustrated by Jim Lee, Ivan Reis, Gene Ha, Kenneth Rocafort, Scott Williams, and Joe Prado.

The New 52 #1 gives us a peek at what will be a major DC crossover event: The Trinity War. What did we learn from The New 52 #1? Well, I learned that Pandora wasn't just created to scare the living daylights out of me. Pandora is a mysterious cloked woman who appeared at the end of Flashpoint and in all of the New 52 #1 issues. Go check it out... it's eerie.

Here, we find out that Pandora is 1 of 3 outcasts known as the Trinity of Sin. Each of these individuals received a unique sentencing for their sins. One man was forced to wander the earth to watch its tragedies. Another man was stripped of his identity. Pandora was sentenced to an eternity of desolation.

Why such harsh punishment? Pandora opened a box. This wasn't just any box. This box contained a movie prop from Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. I'm joking, of course, but the box did contain a skull. Centuries after her sentence, Pandora seeks to re-acquire this item because it is apparently necessary for freedom from her punishment.

Although the box is kept under high security, Pandora manages to break in and steal it. She opens the box, looks at the skull, and says "And it must be dealt with. Even if it means the end of the Justice League".

What!? Never. The Justice League will save the day... right?

The story concludes with Batman fighting an unknown Green Lantern, followed by an amazing work of art. I can try to explain how good it is, but I'd rather you see for yourself:

How evil is Pandora, if at all? What is the function of that skull? What will Pandora do with the skull? Why are our beloved heroes at war? Why did Green Arrow shoot an arrow into Cyborg's head? Who is that new Green Lantern and why is he acting like such an asshole?

As you can see, this comic raised a lot of questions. I have no doubt that all of my questions will be answered in due time. I'm looking forward to it.

But wait... there's more! This comic book also gives a page or two preview for each title of The New 52 "The Second Wave". These titles include G.I. Combat, Batman Incorporated, Dial H, Earth 2, World's Finest, and The Ravagers.

That Green Lantern figure has my name written all over it.
Last, but certainly not least, The New 52 #1 gives us a look at the upcoming DC Comics New 52 Justice League action figures! Here are the release months for each figure:

  • Batman - May '12
  • Green Lantern - June '12
  • Aquaman - June '12
  • The Flash - August '12
  • Cyborg - October '12
  • Wonder Woman - October '12

The Free Comic Book Day edition of DC Comics: The New 52 #1 was jam packed. I'd love to hear your thoughts, predictions, and/or concerns.
