TMNT Micro-Series #4

*This post contains spoilers*

IDW's Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Micro-Series #4 takes a closer look at Leonardo, the most focused Ninja Turtle with the most under-utilized weapon. If you want to know more about the previous issues in the series, check out my reviews of TMNT Micro-Series #1, 2, and 3.

Published on April 18, 2012, written by Brian Lynch, and illustrated by Ross Campbell and Jay Fotos, TMNT Micro-Series #4 begins with Splinter being kidnapped. The Turtles immediately take action and decide to split up to look for him. Thankfully, in a crisis like this, The Turtles can count on Leonardo to have his head on straight.

One aspect of the TMNT Micro-Series that I have enjoyed is the depth of the story. This series goes beyond the immediate action and tells a greater tale. In this issue, we see flashbacks of The Turtles as humans training with their father, Splinter, and being cared for by their mother.

While reminiscing, Leonardo gets attacked by Foot Ninjas. He has no idea what's going on, but he definitely suspects that they have something to do with Splinter's kidnapping. He tries to fight them but there are too many. He tries to outrun them but they are too quick.

Hey, Leo, I have an idea. Use the sharp end of your swords. I understand the tone of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, but don't tell me that you haven't been waiting for Leonardo to slice someone like a ripe tomato. You would think that he'd at least nick an artery or slice a few fingers off just by chance.

Leonardo runs into a house and just as he's about to interrogate a Foot Ninja, a woman jumps out from the dark. They're in her house, and she wants them out. The Foot Ninja quickly takes her and Leonardo chases them to the roof. When he reaches the roof, he's greeted by a ninja with exceptional skill. This guy is not your run-of-the-mill ninja. He reduces Leonardo to a little kid who just finished his first karate lesson.

The unknown assailant holds Leonardo by the neck over the edge of the roof. Just as he's about to let go, you see his face and there is a scar on his left eye. He lets go and Leonardo falls into a dumpster.

Leonardo heads home to consult with his brothers. Everyone is confused and unsure of what to do next. Leonardo, being the strong-willed Turtle that he is, reassures them that they are going to keep kicking butt until they get Splinter back.

TMNT Micro-Series #4 is another great issue in the series. So far I have enjoyed everything about these comics, with the exception of Leonardo keeping his katana blades clean. Next up is TMNT Micro-Series #5 - Splinter, available on June 27!
